PIPELINE CORROSION

Pipelines are typically made of metals such as copper or mild steel. This means they are highly susceptible to the damaging effects of corrosion. Though improvement in technology has resulted in better quality of steel for pipes, they are still easily attacked by rust. Both the inside and outside surfaces of pipes are easily corroded due to a number of reasons.

Most pipes have a constant flow of liquid such as water, oil or fuel passing through them. These liquids either have high oxygen content like water or carry physical or chemical contaminants which can cause corrosion. Furthermore, the velocity at which the liquids flow also prove highly detrimental to the durability of pipes. In contrast, stagnant liquids and pipes which are unused for long periods also suffer from corrosion. Rust can be kept at bay by ensuring that pipes have smooth surfaces on the inside and outside without soldering chinks or welding flaws. This is because, they can create small cavities which hasten corrosive action.

With so many factors which can cause corrosion in pipelines , pre-emptive action is essential to increase the longevity of pipelines and keep them free from rust induced damage.

PREVENTING CORROSION INSIDE PIPES

Pipelines carrying water can be kept safe from corrosion by adding in certain solutions. These solutions are typically water soluble and work by forming a film. The film acts as a barrier between any corrosion causing elements, however, care must be taken to ensure that the treated water has come into contact with all metallic surfaces within the pipe, in order to function efficiently. The solution must be added every 6 months to keep the pipes in good shape. This method is not only easy and quick, but is also eco-friendly. Deva offers different anti corrosion solutions for sea water and freshwater.

PREVENTING CORROSION OUTSIDE PIPES

The outer surface of pipes is as prone to rust, as the inner surface. This is because pipelines, especially those which are outdoors, are exposed to a variety of atmospheric conditions such as high humidity and rainfall. All these create an environment for corrosion to spread rapidly. The best way to protect the outside surface of pipes is by applying anti corrosive coatings. There are a wide range of these available and Deva has a specially formulated water based eco coating which has zero toxic Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) Not only is this coating safe for humans but it also causes no long-term effects to the environment. There are also wax based and polyurethane based coatings available at Deva, which are used as per requirements. With such a wide range of coatings, Deva has an anti-corrosion solution for every need in every industry.

With pipelines being a major part of any industrial application, it is important to keep them functioning without any hitch. So, it is very important to ensure corrosion resistance is taken care of, according to the varying locations and necessities of every industry.
